Supplying Cows for Pet Food

We accept live cows for raw pet food processing if they meet MPI (Ministry for Primary Industries) guidelines.


We Can Accept Cows That Have:

  • Unwanted but healthy condition

  • Withholding periods (e.g. antibiotics, dry cow)

  • Mastitis (but not black or gangrenous)

  • Injuries like breaks or dislocations

  • Calving paralysis (within 4 days of calving)

  • Arthritis

  • Eczema

  • Johne’s disease

  • Milk fever or grass staggers (with a vet’s statement)

  • Are still alive but unable to stand (down cows)

We Cannot Accept Cows That Are:

  • Already deceased

  • Have black or gangrenous mastitis

  • Suffering from blood poisoning

  • Diagnosed with TB (Tuberculosis)

  • Infected with Salmonella, Listeria, Ketosis, or Acidosis

  • Showing signs of systemic illness

Supplying Calves for Pet Food


Southern Pet Foods – Southland, NZ
We accept live calves for raw pet food processing under MPI (Ministry for Primary Industries) guidelines. Our team is committed to offering a humane, efficient, and well-organised service throughout the busy calving season.


We Can Accept Calves That Are:

  • Alive on arrival

  • Any age for on-farm slaughter only

  • Fed penicillin milk (please inform the driver)

  • Fed within 24 hours prior to on-farm slaughter if over 24 hours old

  • Without tags – tags are not required

We Cannot Accept Calves That Are:

  • Already deceased

  • Sick or showing signs of systemic illness

Important Supplier Information:

  • Calves do NOT need to be 4 days old for on-farm slaughter

  • Calves for live transport must be at least 4 days old

  • Live transport must be arranged and paid for by the farmer

  • Farms with regular collections are not required to submit an ASD or NAIT form for each pickup

  • However, a Young Calf Supplier Statement is required to cover collections for 2024

Collection Schedule & Availability:

  • Southland & Surrounding Areas:

  • On-farm slaughter available 5–6 days per week (Monday to Saturday)

  • Frequency may increase based on demand

Southern Pet Foods accepts goats for raw pet food processing. If you have goats available, we’d love to hear from you.

Animal Status Declaration (ASD) Form Required

If you are supplying sheep, goats, deer, or horses, you must provide an Animal Status Declaration (ASD) form each time.
